BREAKING NEWS!!! 15-01-2023: Comenius College is a school with ACCREDITATION for the ERASMUS+ programme!
Internationalization in your school is one of the most interesting things you can do for your students and colleagues. It is very satisfying to see it work. Over 25 years we participated in a lot of international project. Almost all projects turned out succesful, actually only one was a big disaster. So through the years we discovered what can make a project a succes.
1. A dedicated coordinator.
2 A common language that is spoken and written by all participants.
3. Keep to your schedule.
4. Have a group of motivated colleagues and students around you.
5. Have the support of your management.
6. Be aware of bureaucratic systems.
7. Be flexible and not too nervous.
8. Take the parents with you in the process.
9. Be aware it is not a 9 to 5 job.
10. Have regular contact with your National Agency.
11. Keep up with new developments.
12. Keep your administration in order.
13. Don't work by your self, gather other colleagues around you.
14. Be aware that some countries come with higher costs because host families are not common: Malta, UK.
15. Try to participate with so called unknown countries. They are often so hospital and friendly. Examples: Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Bulgaria, Poland, Turkey.
16. Be aware that some countries have to stick exactly to the programme: UK, Germany, Austria.
17. Some countries have a very strong bureaucratic system: Poland, Italy.
18. Agree what is allowed or not allowed for students going to countries with another age level. Think of the use of alcohol, smoking etc.
19. If you have the feeling the project is not what it should be: contact the coordinator or if this doesn't help your National Agency.
20. Keep up the good work!

The Netherlands: Comenius College, Capelle aan den IJssel
website:
www.comenius.nl
Comenius College is a school of secondary education that offers all levels of our national system, meaning from Practical VMBO till VWO. In this campus we have about 2500 students and our scope is regional, combining the city center of Rotterdam, the suburb of Capelle aan den IJssel and the wide countryside of different regions. Our school is specialized in internationalization, bilingual education and we do have excellent arts and exact science departments. We offer a variety of languages like Dutch, English, French, German and Spanish. Most of our students come from the nearby area and countryside, but because of the metro stop in front of the school yet more students come from the Rotterdam City Centre. So we have a mixture of students. We have students from a lot of nationalities, partly of our Dutch history, but also of the latest migration waves. So, we do have a number of students involved in the projects coming from other countries, but that’s not a real problem.
As Rotterdam is a very international orientated city, we as a school would like to offer our students the opportunity to work in international surroundings as well. We think it is very important to let them experience the European/World Dimension in a lot of aspects and getting to know students from other European countries.. International projects are part of our curriculum and are supported by all: students, parents, teachers, staff and overall staff. In our school we have a task force internationalization.
Our school has started a bilingual department in 2010. This was for the highest level (VWO) In 2019 we also started with a bilingual department at the HAVO-level. (The one but highest level in our school system. That’s another important reason why we focus on international projects. The VWO bilingual stream has reached the examination year, so the stream is completed from year one to year six. So we are proud to be the first school in our region to offer this great possibility to our students. We like to work on international topics that have real meaning for our students and teachers for now and in the future.
In this website you will see all our partner schools we worked with in the past and those who are still involved in our international projects.
Another possibility in our school is to do International Business College. In this stream students are focusing on Entrepreneurship. It may be clear that also these students are looking forward to international activities.
In 2021/2022 Comenius College was looking at the introduction of Chinese as a possible language. That wil be decided after a survey among the students. It turned out to be very positive and in the school year 2022 Chinese language is taught is flex hours and is open for all students.
After the difficult period with COVID-19 Comenius College is fully operational to go forward with international project. Our ties with India and Japan will be strenghtened and our students and colleagues have been to Lithuania, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Bulgaria and Turkey and other countries will be visited within our existing projects soon. The future seems bright, although we fully realize that with the war going on in Ukraine nothing can be taken for granted.
